CREST

Brand book

A fictional brand. Concept work.

02Tokens

Colour

Crest is dark-first. The customer app, the website hero and Treasury default to Obsidian. Bone is for editorial website sections, the Crest for Brands portal, and print. Gold is the only colour that is allowed to shine.

Seventeen tokens. Select a hex to copy it. The Aa sample shows the better of Bone and Obsidian on each swatch, with its computed WCAG verdict.

Semantic roles

Components never read the palette, only these twelve roles. Values come straight from theme.dark and theme.colors. A light value that is not a palette token is a tonal variant: the text roles are darkened to pass AA on Bone, and the hairline is a quiet tint.

Devanagari falls back to Noto Sans Devanagari (400, 500, 600). It sits smaller than Latin at the same size, so body sizes get +1 px and a line-height of × 1.1. Product names such as Crowns, Standing and Clean Sheet stay in Latin script.

04How we sound

Voice

Crest talks like a club that is sure of itself and has no need to prove it. Four principles, one rule about money, and the names we keep using.

Personality

exclusive but not snobbish · witty but never silly · understated luxury · a little self-aware · scrupulously honest about money

Imagine the voice as a club secretary who has seen everything: dry, kind, precise, and occasionally funny. Never shouting, never using exclamation marks about money.

Four principles

Each one comes with the line we would write and the line we would not. The second line is always something a bank might send.

Principle 1

Understate

Short sentences. Let the craft do the showing off.

Do

Paid. Harbour Bank has it.

Don't

Woohoo!! Your payment was SUCCESSFUL 🎉🎉

Do

Your Standing rose 4 points.

Don't

AMAZING! Your score is ON FIRE!

Principle 2

Numbers first, honestly

Always show ₹ next to Crowns. Never hide a fee, a cost, or odds.

Do

1,450 Crowns (₹362.50)

Don't

1,450 Crowns!

(with no value)

Do

Paying the minimum ₹2,411 instead of ₹48,210 costs about ₹2,133 in interest and GST next month.

Don't

Pay minimum due now

(shown as an equal option)

Principle 3

Dry wit, used sparingly

A wink in places where no money is at stake: empty states, "better luck" lines, careers. Never in errors about money.

Do

Goldleaf miss

Not this time. Your Standing remains immaculate, which is rather the point.

Don't

Payment failure

Oops, the money gremlins struck again 😜

Do

Careers

We're picky here too.

Don't

Error

Well, this is awkward…

Principle 4

Welcome, don't reject

Gatekeeping is part of the brand. Humiliation is not.

Do

Not yet. You're 38 points away. Here's the shortest route.

Don't

Sorry, you are not eligible.

Do

You're in the Lobby. Standing is open to you now.

Don't

Access denied.

Hindi voice

Keep the same restraint. Use natural, conversational Hindi rather than bank-form Hindi.

Do

भुगतान हो गया। Harbour Bank तक पहुँच गया।

(In English: Paid. Harbour Bank has it.)

Don't

भुगतान सफलतापूर्वक संपन्न हुआ

(bank-form Hindi)

The naming system

Everything is named in English, in the same register: short, club-like and literal. Crest is one word with three meanings, and the brand uses all of them.

  1. 01

    A heraldic crest

The emblem of a family or club. Being a member means wearing one.

  2. 02

    The crest of a wave

The peak. Good credit is being at the top of your financial wave.

  3. 03

A crest on a coin or seal

A mark of authenticity. Every Crown carries it, and every letter is sealed with it.

It is one syllable, easy to say in every Indian language, has no Hindi or brand collisions in the category, and turns naturally into a symbol (a shield built from a single C).

The brand story

The story is the voice at length. Every principle above shows up in it somewhere.

Somewhere between the statement date and the due date, millions of Indians quietly do the right thing. They pay in full. On time. Every month. Nobody claps. The bank sends an SMS with a reference number. The reward points lose a third of their value by spring.

Crest was founded on a simple belief: good financial behaviour deserves the ceremony we usually save for luck. So we built a club. Members pay every card in one calm place. Each payment earns Crowns, and each Crown has a printed price, the same way a coin does. You spend them at Crownhouse, a small, obsessively edited store of Indian makers, kitchens and hideaways. And we show you your Standing, so you always know what's working.

We are picky about who gets in, but we also tell you exactly how to get there. Good credit is a craft. We think it should be crowned.

06Weight and ceremony

Motion

Heavy things accelerate slowly and settle; light things get out of the way. One ceremonial moment per flow, and everything around it quick and quiet.

Four principles

Everything below follows from these.

  1. Weight.

Things in Crest are heavy: metal, gold, vault doors. Large objects accelerate slowly and settle with a small overshoot. Nothing floats.

  2. Material truth.

Light moves across metal. Gold catches the light. Foil flakes off. Coins bounce and clink. Motion reveals the material.

  3. Ceremony, then calm.

Each flow has one ceremonial moment (vault, Crownfall, Goldleaf, gauge), and everything around it is quick and quiet.

  4. Honest timing.

Never slow down a money action for drama. The ceremony happens after the money has moved, never before.

Easing curves

Five curves, plotted from the actual cubic-bezier. Press play to run a marker along each one at the duration it is usually paired with. They live in theme.ts as ease.* and reach Tailwind as ease-brand, ease-enter, ease-exit, ease-vault and ease-settle.

Springs

Four springs for things that have weight. Each response below is solved from the damped-oscillator equation, released at rest, on one shared clock. All four land with under 1% overshoot: the weight is in how slowly they arrive, not in how far they swing.

Crownfall

04 §5.3 · 28 coins
Fixed-step physics on a 2D canvas: gravity, restitution 0.32, sleeping. Haptic clink, at most one per 45 ms and 24 a fall.

Specimen

Goldleaf

04 §5.4 · destination-out
Scratch the foil. A grain haptic every 60 px, and it reveals at 55% cleared. Reduced motion drops the dust and dissolves the foil.

Specimen

Gold lever

spring.lever 520 / 30 / 0.6
Rotates 38° either side of centre. Tick haptic on toggle. Space or Enter works, and the state is announced.

Specimen

Standing gauge

spring.gauge 60 / 14 / 1
A 240° sweep from 300 to 900. A tick every 50 points the needle crosses. Reduced motion snaps.

Light crosses the embossed shield, then the crown notch glints. Tap it to skip.

07Imagery

Illustrations

Engraved line art, the way banknotes and stamps are engraved: fine parallel hatching, guilloché rosettes, laurel. Five plates cover every empty, waiting and ceremonial moment. They are drawn in code, in one colour, and never with a gradient.

The five plates

Each plate is shown in both colourings. The engraving is identical: only the ink changes.

Gold on Obsidian

Obsidian on Bone

Plate I

Envelope with seal

A slightly open envelope, the flap lined with a banknote security weave and the crest pressed in wax.

Used for The invite screen, and every place an invitation arrives.

Gold on Obsidian

Obsidian on Bone

Plate II

Vault door

A round door seen front on: bolted frame, milled edge, convex face and a handwheel over a guilloché dial.

Used for The onboarding vault, the Lobby, and the security page on the site.

Gold on Obsidian

Obsidian on Bone

Plate III

Empty ledger

An open ledger with ruled pages and one empty column, a pen at rest. Nothing owed.

Used for Empty states, and the billboard "Your late-fee column is looking very empty."

Gold on Obsidian

Obsidian on Bone

Plate IV

Laurel

A wreath open at the top under a crown notch, every leaf hatched on one side, tied with a ribbon.

Used for Laureate, the Standing factor "consistency", and the laurel dividers of the manifesto.

Gold on Obsidian

Obsidian on Bone

Plate V

Keys

Two heraldic keys crossed and tied with a ribbon, the bows set with guilloché.

Used for The Keys screen: keys are invites. Unused keys are gold, sent keys outlined.

Where each one lives

One plate per moment. The same plate is never used for two different feelings.

Empty states
Empty ledger. No cards, no orders, a quiet inbox: copy bank 25 to 29 sit beneath it.
The Lobby
Vault door. The door is shut for now, and the Standing beside it is yours to use while you climb.
Invite screen
Envelope with seal, in the top 55% of the screen, with the folded-letter card overlapping it.
Standing factors
Laurel for "consistency" and for the Laureate tier. The other factors take their own small mark.
Keys screen
Keys, three of them: unused in gold, sent ones outlined with the recipient’s name.
Website manifesto
Laurel dividers between the articles, built from the same leaf generator (below).

Two colourings, never a third

One ink, chosen by the surface. The plates use currentColor, so the parent sets it.

Use

Gold on Obsidian

The default on dark surfaces: the app, the vault, the billboard.

Use

Obsidian on Bone

On light paper: the manifesto, the certificate, the letter.

Never

Gold on Bone

1.9:1. The fine hatching disappears. Use Obsidian.

Legible from 96 to 480 px

Every plate is drawn on a 240-unit sheet, so the hatching is 0.75 px at 240 px. Below 96 px use an icon from the family in Iconography instead.

96 px · smallest160 px · empty states320 to 480 px · onboarding, site

How they are drawn

Everything is code. There is no traced artwork, so every plate can be regenerated, restyled and tested.

Hatching
stroke-width: 0.75 in plate units, parallel lines clipped to the shape, tone made by closing up the spacing.
Contour
Heavier 1.3 lines only where a form needs an edge. Never more than two weights.
Colour
One ink in currentColor: gold on Obsidian, Obsidian on Bone. No fills but small solids, no gradients, no opacity.
Light
From the upper left. The shadow side of every convex form takes the closer hatching.
Guilloché
Generated by guilloche(), three to five overlaid rosettes, set into a seal, a dial, a bow, a page.
Deterministic
No Math.random. The same code gives the same plate on the server, in tests and in print.

Hatching

Parallel, cross-hatched, a tone ramp, and crescents on a convex form.

Guilloché rosette

Four rosettes straight from guilloche(), unedited.

Laurel border

Each leaf hatched on one side; later leaves overlap earlier ones. The manifesto's divider.

In use: an empty state

Copy bank 25, exactly as it ships, with the plate above it and one action below. The same tile on both surfaces.

08Physical

Mockups

Crest is a tactile brand: blind emboss, deboss, foil and engraving over ink. This is every physical item it lives on, as a checklist that fills itself as renders arrive.
